How It Works
The National BrewChallenge is an organization that wants to help the home brew community by bringing everyone together, no matter where they are in the US, and pit the best brewers from multiple competitions against each other at the Brew Strong Competition to see who’s beer reigns supreme. Whoever wins it all gets eternal bragging rights and a home brewers dream of a Grand Prize that will change every year.
As you can see from our list of Registered Competitions, it takes a lot to get to the final round of competing in the Brew Strong Competition. First, you have to win either Best of Show or the Heavy Medal Award at one of the qualifying home brew comps.
Once you win the qualifier, the excitement really starts! You will be sent the recipes and ingredients for 3 secret beers, chosen by Jamil Zainasheff, owner of Heretic Brewing Company and heavily decorated home brewer and BJCP Beer Judge.
You will have to brew these beers using the ingredients that you receive with the only alterations being your personal brewing process. All winners will receive the same grains, yeast and hops in the same amounts. The only way to be the winner is to brew the best beer – head to head against the exact same beers!
Jamil will judge these beers alongside his own panel of handpicked beer judges and beer legends to see who reigns supreme!
How Do I Get My Competition Involved?
This is the easy part! Head over to our Registered Competitions page and take a look at our Qualifying Competition Guidelines. If you think your competition adheres to our guidelines, click our signup form and give us the information about your competition, and we will contact you directly to finish the process.
That’s it! Our goal is to be as inclusive as possible and while we are limiting the 2021 National BrewChallenge to 4 total competitions, we will be opening things up for the 2022 Competition Season! You can submit your signup form anytime!
What is the Timeline for the National BrewChallenge?
Every year, both new and established competitions will have the opportunity to submit their winners if they are registered qualifying competitions. The final Round, the Brew Strong Competition, will be held in April of the following year, so no competitions will have to move their comps around or scramble to be involved. Once they are registered, all they’ll have to do is submit the winners!
No matter when you hold your competition, you’ll have until December 31st to submit your Best of Show and Heavy Medal Winners to the National BrewChallenge. From there, we will contact your winners directly and give them step by step guidelines for the Brew Strong Competition.
The only winners that will move on in 2021 are the Best of Show Winner and the Heavy Medal Winner. Registered comps must submit the winners by December 31st, 2021. The National BrewChallenge will notify winners and send out recipes and ingredients in January. Brewers will have to have their beers ready and shipped between March 14th, 2022 and March 25th, 2022.
The Brew Strong Competition is tentatively scheduled to be held April 2nd, 2022.
